More property updates we have received recently.
ACCOMMODATION – SOUTH AFRICA
Cape Royale (Cape Town, South Africa) has changed ownership and is moving away from Hotel services and is operating as Luxury Residence – it is no longer operating as a hotel. It has also downgraded to 4 stars and no longer offers breakfast. Further updates will be communicated as they are announced.
Ellerman House (Cape Town, South Africa) has advised that a site located to the below right of the property is currently being cleared for the development of a new residential property. The site is not visible from any of the tiered terraces and due to stringent height restrictions, the uninterrupted ocean views will not be affected.
Place on the Bay (Cape Town, South Africa) has advised that its elevator is currently out of order and they will notify once it is up and running again.
Tintswalo Atlantic (Cape Town, South Africa) has announced that it will re-open on 01 October 2019.
Trevoyan Hotel (Cape Town, South Africa) will be closed from 17 June 2019 and is scheduled to re-open on 01 August 2019.
Hawksmoor House (Stellenbosch, South Africa) will cease operating as a guest house as of 31 March 2019. The owners have taken the decision to develop it for residential occupation.
Birchwood Hotel (Johannesburg, South Africa) will start is renovation process on the reception area as of 01 April 2019 for approximately three months. A temporary reception set-up will serve all guests in the interim with as little guest disturbance as possible.
Castello di Monte (Pretoria, South Africa) has amended its re-opening date and is now scheduled to re-open on 05 January 2020.

Windmill Country Retreat (Hazyview, South Africa) is currently undergoing phased construction and will remain fully operational during the process. The phases include:
Phase 1 – The addition of five rooms in the form of wooden log cabins.
Phase 2 – Construction of a new infinity pool, lapa and pool deck.
Phase 3 – Renovation of dining room into a restaurant and bar. The pool lapa will be used as a private function venue during this phase.
Phase 4 – Soft refurbishment of existing accommodations.
Phase 5 – The addition of eight log cabins.
The phased construction is scheduled to be complete within 2019.
Geiger’s Camp (Motswari Private Game Reserve, South Africa) has advised that as of 01 March 2019, all guests having dinner at the camp will be requested to dress in smart casual attire. Gentlemen are kindly requested to wear long pants or trousers and closed shoes (no sports shoes).
Zulu Nyala Game Lodge’s (Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal) closure dates have been extended until 31 March 2019.
ACCOMMODATION – ZIMBABWE
Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) is closed for a refurbishment as of 11 February 2019 and is scheduled to re-open on 31 March 2019.
ACCOMMODATION – ZAMBIA
Devil’s Pool (Victoria Falls, Zambia) is closed for the season, due to high water levels. The alternative, Angel’s Pool, will remain open until further notice.
Airlink (South Africa) has announced the following updates:
- The Embraer E-Jet has been introduced on the early morning services between Johannesburg and Richards Bay. The Airlink schedule of three flights per day has now become an all-jet service, offering customers enhanced Jet comfort, a generous seat pitch, an expansive business class and a reduced flying time.
- Services between O.R. Tambo International Airport and Mthatha Airport will resume as of 19 February 2019. The SACAA is satisfied that Mthatha Airport has addressed its shortcomings and the airport has re-opened. Airlink will provide early morning and late afternoon return flights using one of its Embraer 135, 37-seater regional jets Monday to Friday. An early morning flight will operate on Saturdays and an afternoon flight on Sundays. Additional flights will be added to the schedule as the route returns to normal.
Air Botswana (Southern Africa) has resumed the direct Gaborone – Cape Town service with effect from 01 March 2019. This will be followed by the Johannesburg – Kasane, Gaborone – Harare, and Gaborone – Lusaka services with effect from 31 March 2019.
The latest update on Lookout Café (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe), devastated by a fire in December 2018, is that they are currently in the process of rebuilding and have not released an official re-opening date; however, provisional bookings are being accepted as of July 2019 onwards. The rebuild is also focusing on being more environmentally friendly.
Reminder: The Victoria Falls Bridge (Victoria Falls, Zambia & Zimbabwe) will be closed on 07 July 2019 from 06h00 to 11h00 for the Victoria Falls Marathon.
