More property updates we have received recently.


Ellerman House (Cape Town, South Africa) has been informed that the residential site below and to the right of it is being cleared for possible development in 2019. They have been informed that the site will be cleared until March 2019 and they will update us as further information is received. The site is not visible from the hotel but there will be some noise during the daytime.

Garden Route Game Lodge (Albertinia, South Africa) has completed an extensive upgrade to its pool, its garden and its recreational space as well as the addition of new suites.

Botlierskop Game Reserve (Garden Route, South Africa) has upgraded and added a new leisure area for its guests.

Villa Afrikana (Knysna, South Africa) will be closed for its annual closure from 19 May 2019 until 11 August 2019.

The Bloem (Knysna, South Africa) will be closed for its annual closure from 01 May 2019 until 30 August 2019.

Directly adjacent to Robberg House at Robberg Beach Lodge (Plettenberg Bay, South Africa) a residential house is currently being built. Please be aware that during this construction time there will be some drilling and sanding taking place from Monday to Friday between 08h00 and 17h00. The impact on the guest experience will be kept to a minimum and the estimated completion date is end of April 2019.

Reminder: Long Lee Manor (Shamwari Game Reserve, South Africa) is closed for refurbishments and upgrades from 01 November 2018 and is scheduled to re-open on 30 November 2019.

The Peech Boutique Hotel (Johannesburg, South Africa) has completed construction of its new Luxury Rooms and now offers 14 of them, some with inter-leading options.

Protea Hotel by Marriott Kruger Gate (Kruger National Park, South Africa) will be undergoing some construction. The building of staff accommodation and laying foundations for the new rooms on the property will commence on 15 January 2019 and the anticipated completion is in March 2019. The construction area is situated away from the hotel and will be screened off to ensure minimal disruption to guests.

Buckler’s Africa (Kruger National Park, South Africa) has changed its closure dates from 15 January 2019 – 01 May 2019, to 01 March 2019 – 01 June 2019.

Fitzpatrick Lodge (Kruger National Park, South Africa) has a new enclosed family unit with two luxury suites with bathrooms that share a private foyer, deck and plunge pool.

Sun City Resort (North West, South Africa) has advised of its proposed swimming pool closure dates for 2019. The dates are subject to change and we will provide regular updates when they become available:

  • Cabanas: 13 May 2019 – 03 June 2019
  • Palace: 02 June 2019 – 01 July 2019
  • Soho: 03 June 2019 – 17 June 2019
  • Vacation Club 1: 03 June 2019 – 20 June 2019
  • Vacation Club 2: 06 May 2019 – 31 May 2019
  • Cascades: 07 July 2019 – 07 Aug 2019
  • Valley of Waves: 08 July 2019 – 05 Aug 2019

Sun City (North West, South Africa) experienced a freak hail storm in December 2018 and all functions have returned to normal, including the re-opening of the swimming pools.

Anew Hotel Hluhluwe & Safaris (Hluhluwe, South Africa) has commenced with a renovation as of 05 January 2019, with a scheduled completion date at the end of March 2019. There will be minimal guest disruption during this time and the hotel will remain open. After the renovation, the hotel will boast over 80 bedrooms, all with private verandahs overlooking the hotel gardens.

Zulu Nyala Game Lodge (Hluhluwe, South Africa) is closed for renovations from 28 December 2018 and is scheduled to re-open on 28 February 2019.

Sandford Park (Bergville, South Africa) has informed us that due to an unexpected issue, the swimming pool is currently out of order. Guests will be compensated with a complimentary lunch pack for their trip to the Royal National Park and Management has undertaken to ensure that the pool is repaired and ready for use within the first quarter of 2019.


Until further notice Chobe Elephant Camp (Chobe National Park, Botswana) will offer its boating activity from Kasane due to the low water level at Ihaha.

Jao Camp (Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana) is expected to open on 01 June 2019, a month earlier than previously advised.

Wilderness Safaris (Botswana) has advised of the following with regards to properties and water activities:

  • As Tubu Tree Camp is currently experiencing low water levels, boating and mokoro activities are no longer on offer. Game viewing and bush walks are still available
  • Duma Tau Camp offers all-year-round water activities
  • Vumbura Plains Camp offers all-year-round water activities
  • Little Vumbura offers water activities all year round
  • Kings Pool Camp’s barge is currently operational
  • Abu Camp is offering mokoro excursions
  • Seba Camp is offering mokoro excursions

Kanana Camp (Okavango Delta, Botswana) has begun its refurbishments and upgrades, which will be scheduled for completion on 01 March 2019, when the camp will also re-open.

Abu Camp (Maun, Botswana) has ceased water activities (mokoro and boat) as water levels have become too low.


Ilala Lodge (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe) will be modifying and resurfacing its swimming pool area in 2019. The swimming pool and poolside seating area will be closed from 14 January 2019 to 28 February 2019. Renovations will take place between 08h00 and 17h00, Monday to Saturday, and guests will be accommodated in rooms away from the refurbishment works. Alternative arrangements will be made for guests to utilise swimming pools at neighbouring hotels.


Massinga Beach (Inhambane, Mozambique) will remain open for the month of February 2019.


SA Express (Southern Africa) will resume its Cape Town operations in January 2019. They will re-introduce flights between Walvis Bay and Cape Town, seven days a week, as of 09 January 2019. They will also re-introduce flights between Cape Town and Bloemfontein as of 09 January 2019. They will also operate scheduled services between Durban and Port Elizabeth.

Air Botswana (Southern Africa) has confirmed that it will be adding a Cape Town to Gaborone flight route. The Cape Town and Gaborone flights are scheduled to start on 05 December 2018 and will operate every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.


Important Update – Blue Train: Please note that Pretoria Station is undergoing upgrades to its rail infrastructure from 14 December 2018 to 28 February 2019. During this time, no trains will be allowed access into the Pretoria Station. These imminent upgrades are going to affect The Blue Train’s departure and arrivals between December 2018 and February 2019.


Important Note: The Lookout Cafe (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe) burnt down in a devastating fire on 24 December 2018. The restaurant will be closed for the foreseeable future; however, the Wild Horizons Highwire activities will continue to operate as normal. Guests will be pre-booked for lunch/dinner at the Palm Restaurant at Ilala Lodge unless otherwise requested.

Important Note: During November 2018 an announcement was made that Botswana would offer visas at all points of entry, airports and land border posts; however, a government official at the Department of Immigration has confirmed that the plans are currently on hold. We will advise on any further updates.

The Maputo-Catembe Bridge (Mozambique) has officially opened.
