More property updates we have received recently.


Steenberg Hotel & Catharina’s Restaurant (Constantia, Cape Town) will be closed for renovations as of 01 May 2019 and is scheduled to re-open on 02 September 2019. A selection of hotel rooms will be refurbished. During the closure, Steenberg Spa, Steenberg Vineyards Tasting Room and Bistro Sixteen82 will be open.

Protea Hotel by Marriott (Cape Town, South Africa) will be replacing cold water, hot water and sewerage pipes in the hotel from 08 May 2019 to 10 August 2019. Two floors will be worked on at a time, with intermittent noise from this project. When the fourth floor work is being carried out during this period, there will be no access to the swimming pool and pool deck.

The Marly (Cape Town, South Africa) will be expanding into a 40-suite boutique hotel with a deluxe spa, gym, rooftop bar, lounge and swimming pool. The existing 11 Luxury Suites will re-open on 01 August 2019, followed by an unveiling of the full 40 suites and new features on 01 December 2019.

2inn1 Kensington (Cape Town, South Africa) will be closed for refurbishments as of 01 May 2019 and is scheduled to re-open on 18 October 2019.

Franschhoek Wine Tram (Franschhoek, South Africa) will not be operating on 14 and 15 September 2019 due to the Franschhoek Uncorked Festival.

The Paddle Cruiser (Knysna, South Africa) has suffered a partial capsize and is currently being repaired. All cruises will be moved to the John Benn and the buffet will be served either on the vessel or in the Cruise Café restaurant.

Villa Paradisa (Knysna, South Africa) will be closed for the month of June 2019 for its annual renovation process.

The St James of Knysna (Knysna, South Africa) has announced some upgrades for its Manor House. Work will only affect one section of the Hotel and guests will be accommodated in The Courtyard. The bar and breakfast room will also be moved to the courtyard temporarily. The renovations will include a total revamp of the kitchen, breakfast and bar area, adding additional rooms and some general upgrades to the current rooms. Work will also be done in the laundry area. The work will commence on 01 May 2019 and is scheduled to be completed by end of June 2019.

Whalesong Hotel & Spa (Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route) will be undergoing a refurbishment starting on 03 May 2019 and is scheduled for completion by August 2019. The hotel will remain open throughout the renovation.

aha Makalali Private Game Lodge (Hoedspruit, South Africa) will be commencing an improvement project and only select rooms at a time will be taken out of the room stock for the upgrade at Main Lodge and River Lodge.

The Palace Hotel (Sun City, South Africa) will be undergoing an extensive soft refurbishment. The refurbishment is currently underway and will continue into 2020 with little to no guest disruption.


Jack’s Camp (Makgadikgadi, Botswana) will be closed for the period 01 October 2019 until 30 April 2020.

Selinda Camp (Okavango Delta, Botswana) is scheduled to re-open on 01 June 2019 after a rebuild.


The Lookout Café (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe) has experienced setbacks in the reconstruction of the restaurant after a devastating fire. The café has postponed its opening date to 01 September 2019.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe) has advised of the following upcoming renovations:

  • Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
    Rethatching of one Bedroom Block: Rooms 1-16

It has become necessary to expedite the planned rethatch due to increased monkey and baboon damage. This will now happen between 05 June – 24 June 2019. There will be little, if any, inconvenience to Lodge Guests, and as usual, Andy Conn, GM Anald Musonza and the team, along with Guest Relations will closely monitor all activity. Those rooms will be back on Inventory on 25 June or, if possible, sooner.

  • The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show
    Kitchens and Cookhouse
    This is a long-planned project which will take place in the first 3 weeks of May 2019. All work will happen during the day and The Boma Dinner & Drum Show will operate as usual every night. There will be some screening of one of the Cookhouses during this time but with no impact on guests. Where necessary, numbers will be limited on certain evenings.


Livingstone Island (Victoria Falls, Zambia) activities and visits will be closed as of 01 May 2019.


Important Note: New Timbavati Gate rules (Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa) have been introduced due to the poaching crisis in the region. Any guests entering the Klaserie, Timbavati and Umbabat will be required to confirm their ID/Passport number at the gate. In addition, the camps are required to provide their passport numbers to the Gate. If your guests do not provide their passport numbers, then you have to ensure that they have a copy of their reservation number at the camp.

Under One Botswana Sky (Botswana) Water Levels Update:

  • Mokoro activities and boat cruises have ceased in all Delta camps until further notice (including PomPom Camp, Moremi Crossing, Gunn’s camp, Rra & Mma Dinare). The situation will be monitored carefully and as soon as the flood waters arrive and water levels are high enough, water activities will resume accordingly.
  • At PomPom Camp & Rra/Mma Dinare camps, guests continue to enjoy day and night game drives as well as walking safaris in game-rich private concessions.
